Radish Night Excerpts: For more than a hundred years, residents of Oaxaca have celebrated La Noche de Rábanos — Radish Night — on the 23rd of December. During the festival, the zócalo, or main square, of this southwestern Mexican city is transformed into a showcase for imaginative works of art that have been carved of radishes. The radishes range in size from small to gigantic, and are grown by the farmers of the greater Oaxaca Valley especially for this competition. Prizes are awarded to the three participants who display the most creativity and passion in their work . . .
